Breast Augmentation Advice
Breast augmentation advice for those considering elective surgery. Information on augmentation complications, risks, techniques, breast drs and more.
Undergoing augmentation with implants is an important decision - one that must be thoroughly considered. It involves a lifetime commitment to maintenance, as breast implants could require replacement multiple times over the course of an individual’s life. The most common reasons for breast implant replacement are hardening of scar tissue around the breast implant (capsular contracture) and breast implant rupture or breast deflation.
While every surgical procedure involves definite risks, informed breast augmentation patients tend to be very pleased with their decision. Your breast dr wants you to feel comfortable asking any and every question that you may have during your consultation, preoperative visit or at any time in determining whether breast augmentation is right for you.
Breast Implant Incisions
A variety of breast augmentation incisions exist, including around the lower border of the areola, from the armpit, in or near the fold under the breast. Deciding which incision is right for your enlargement procedure will be determined by your goals and your breast dr's assessment of your physical condition.
Breast Implant Types
There are many types of saline and silicone breast implants to choose from. You breast doctor will help you choose the one that's right for you as they are individualized to the patient's body build and aesthetic desires. Teardrop or anatomical and round breast implant shapes are available. Breast implants come in a variety of sizes and profiles (degree of projection off the chest wall).
Breast Implant Positions
Breast implants are placed either partially under the pectoral chest muscle or directly under the breast. Subpectoral placement tends to better hide breast implant imperfections such as implant edge and wrinkling. Breast implants also tend to stay softer longer in the subpectoral position. In certain situations, such as with droop-prone breasts and in body builders with thick musculature, the subglandular position may be chosen.
